Text: Titus 1:5-9

Main Idea: Jesus leads His church through a plurality of elders who display imperfect, yet, clear spiritual maturity under His headship.

  1.  Elders display spiritual maturity in the home. (vs. 6)
    1. A one-woman man.
    2. A really good dad.
  2.  Elders display spiritual maturity through personal character. (vs. 7-8)
    • An elder must NOT be:
      1. Arrogant
      2. Quick-tempered (James 1:19)
      3. A drunkard
      4. Violent
      5. Greedy for gain (1 Tim. 3:3)
    • An elder MUST be:
      1. Hospitable
      2. A lover of good (Phil. 4:8)
      3. Self-controlled
      4. Upright
      5. Holy
      6. Disciplined
  3.  Elders display spiritual maturity through centering their lives and teaching on the Bible. (vs. 9)
    • Elders have deep, strong Biblical conviction.
    • Two doctrinal tasks for elders:
      1. Teach sound doctrine
      2. Rebuke those who oppose sound doctrine
